Come Hell or High Water Michael Pinsky has been appointed as Climate Change: Cultural Change artist in residence with CarbonNeutral Newcastle, starting in April 2006. He proposes to make a fleet of luminescent cars struggling almost submerged up The River Tyne at Newcastle Quayside. By day, the roofs of the brightly coloured cars will make a meandering line; by night they will be lit internally, the light reflected and absorbed into the Tyne's flowing waters. The effect will be to suggest a future when the river rises with the water of melted glaciers and ice-sheets, and amphibious transport becomes a necessity (or, it could be, an anthem for a drowned world). Critical of short-term fixes for climate change, Pinsky asks, "As our journeys become increasingly unpredictable will our ingenious solutions save the short term crisis to create long term problems?" ![]() << Back to Programme |
